Congratulations and Salute to Cheryl Ciammetti, Retiring Band Director

Ms. Cheryl Ciammetti will take her final bow and retire this year after 34 years as District 89 Band Director. Ms. Ciammetti joined District 89 in 1986, after graduating from the prestigious VanderCook College of Music. Herself a French Horn player, Ms. Ciammetti always knew she wanted to pursue a career in music education. As a student in middle school, she was recruited by her Band Director to help tutor the elementary Band students. It was a natural fit and Ms. Ciammetti has been playing and teaching instrumental music ever since.

During her time at District 89, Ms. Ciammetti has shared her love of music with generations of students in the Maywood, Melrose Park and Broadview communities. She believes learning to play an instrument sets a student up for success and feels lucky to have found a place in District 89 that she will truly miss. She shared that she loves the kids and will most miss watching them grow.

Dr. Algeanna Griffin, Garfield School Assistant Principal and former D89 Band student shared, “Ms. Ciammetti’s love of music guided and provided me with the courage to take chances. In doing so, I realized my hidden talents were in music. She allowed me to explore many instruments, encouraged me to keep going, and introduced me to my first love, the Flute. She modeled excellence, and I took that to heart and attached that mentality to everything I do!”

Best wishes on your retirement and much gratitude for nurturing our students and advancing music education in District 89. Brava!
