School is Open: January 29, 2019

January 27, 2019

Good evening District 89 Families and Staff,

As everyone is well aware, the upcoming weather week promises to provide all of us with challenges – from snow to wind to historically cold temperatures. Please read below for some important and time-sensitive information.

 Monday

Throughout the school year, but especially during the winter months we closely monitor the weather forecasted by the National Weather Service. We know that closing school is disruptive to the learning process and to families, and we take this step only when it is absolutely necessary in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, particularly those who walk or are bused to school. At this time we DO NOT expect to close school on Monday, January 28. In the event that unsafe conditions require the close of school, the decision will be communicated by email, text, phone message, district website, and social media by 6:00 a.m.

Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday

While conditions and temperatures are certainly presenting as challenges throughout the week, we are planning to hold regular days of school on these days, assuming forecasts, buses and our building mechanical systems do not throw a surprise in our direction. To be clear, Lakeview (our bus service provider) may have a challenge getting its diesel bus fleet to turnover given the anticipated 36 hours of bitter cold anticipated from late Tuesday through midday Thursday. Be prepared for the possibility that bus service may be impacted. We will keep parents informed prior to the start of school if necessary if bus routes are significantly impacted.

 Wednesday

Weather forecasts for Wednesday are predicting record-breaking low temperatures. As such, we will communicate any information regarding closure of schools as early as possible. Again, please expect more communication as the week progresses.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we navigate the next several school days together.
