Washington Dual Language Academy Students Experience High School Life at Proviso East

On Wednesday, April 30, seventeen students from Washington Dual Language Academy had a unique opportunity to experience a day in the life of a high school student during the school’s first-ever Shadow Day at Proviso East High School. Accompanied by Assistant Principal Ms. Boyd and Behavioral Specialist Ms. Lapacek, the students were warmly welcomed by Principal Hull, who introduced them to his leadership team and set the tone for an engaging day.

During the visit, school counselors provided valuable information about academic credits, honors classes, extracurricular clubs, sports opportunities, and the importance of maintaining good grades, especially for students wishing to participate in athletics. Counselors also reviewed the school dress code and emphasized personal responsibility as students prepare to transition to high school.

The day began with a creative start in an art class with Ms. Risch, where students explored the meaning of art and participated in an origami activity, crafting colorful butterflies to decorate the classroom. In the second period, Ms. Bojalad introduced the students to various educational apps they can use to enhance their learning. During the third class, Ms. Dominguez led a discussion on technology and the concept of nomophobia—the fear of being without one’s phone—prompting many thoughtful questions from students about navigating high school life.

The Shadow Day gave students a glimpse into high school academics and expectations, helping to ease anxieties and build excitement for the next chapter in their educational journey.
